      Casters are easy to overlook when designing or purchasing mobile equipment. They are usually small compared with the cabinet, cart, table or equipment frame they support. Yet when a caster starts to wear or move poorly, the problem can quickly become noticeable.

      A cart that once moved easily may suddenly require more pushing force. A mobile cabinet may begin to make noise across the floor. A service trolley may become harder to turn. In some cases, a damaged wheel can even affect the stability of the entire product.

      For indoor furniture and light equipment, the condition of the caster has a direct effect on daily use.       The replacement should match the original caster specification. Wheel diameter, width, axle dimensions, mounting height and connection type all need to be checked.

      Installing a wheel that looks similar is not always enough. A different wheel diameter can change the equipment height, while a different wheel hardness can change rolling resistance and floor contact.

      Caster Design Should Start With the Equipment

      The best time to think about caster maintenance is before the equipment enters production.

      Manufacturers should consider the caster mounting space, required equipment height, expected load and movement pattern during the design stage.

      For furniture, appearance may also be important. A compact TPR caster can provide mobility without giving a small cabinet or display unit an overly industrial appearance.

      For carts, maneuverability may be the priority. A swivel caster can make tight turns easier, while a rigid caster can provide directional control. Braking requirements should also be considered when the equipment needs to remain stationary during use.

      These details affect not only the initial movement of the product but also its long-term service performance.

      A Better Caster Can Improve the User Experience

      Users rarely think about the caster when everything works correctly. They simply expect the cabinet to move, the cart to turn and the equipment to stay where it is placed.

      That changes immediately when the caster begins to fail.

      Movement becomes harder. Noise increases. The equipment may wobble or pull toward one side. A brake may stop holding properly. Small problems that started at floor level can become frustrating problems for the person using the equipment every day.

      This explains why caster selection deserves more attention than its small physical size suggests.
